The club's golf classic was a tremendous success as an event. The weather was perfect for golf on the Friday morning and the early bird team of Joe Carthy and Sean Kelly left a score card for the pack to chase.
At 12.30pm the classic got on its way and there was 19 teams on the day who enjoyed the hospitality of Ashbourne United and the quality of the course in Ashbourne Golf Club. When all the steaks were eaten, and the drink was going down well, the score cards were counted and two teams ended up with 90 points.
The winning team, with the better back nine, was captained by long time club sponsor Mark Ronan of Ashtech Wood Products. The team included two former players, Robbie Prowse and Aidan Bodkin and was completed by long time supporter Gerry Butler.
The second place team was captained by, first team stalwart, Peter Kane, and included teammate Ronan Power and a couple of 'ringers' brought in to win the big prize!
The third place team was captained by Colum Traynor (wasn't he on the organizing committee, enough said!), partnered by Sean Barrett, Robert Kane and some dude who was too cool to take off his hat - where does Crowe get them from.
The fourth place went to Alan Corcoran's team which included his father-in-law, but we don't know the other members as Alan never stopped talking long enough to introduce them :)
Fifth place was won by Damien McCartens team which included first team players Dan Lonergan and Barry Maguire - Greg Smyth was the 'ringer' who made up the team but he couldn't keep the boys off the Bulmers, hence the poor placing.
Mens nearest the pin was Greg Smyth
Mens longest drive was Richard Brennan
Both womens prizes were won by Mrs Lonergan but her son Mark was presented with the prizes as the only other female player!
The club would like to thank Ashbourne Golf Club and Unique Cuisine for their hospitality on the day. A big thanks to all the competitors and prize sponsors for their continued support and a very big thanks to Adam Scally and Colum Traynor for the weeks of work they put in on the run up to the day.
We must also thank John McKeown of Nivea for Men for his continued support of the classic. Each year John puts up Nivea packs for the competitors and does so with tremendous humility - we don't feel so guilty this year because his son's, David (Rocky) and John jnr, are back among our footballing ranks.
