Chairman's Profile:
Greg McNamee joined Ashbourne United when he was at the latter end of his playing career. Born on the Navan Road, he played most of his football for Villa Park Rangers before signing for Ashbourne United (where he now lives) in 1988.
In 1990/91 he took over as first team player/manager leading the club to their first ever junior honours to win AUL Division 3A Sunday and the Frank Roe Cup in the same season. He led the side to silverware the following season, 1991/92, when they won AUL Division 2A Sunday.
After his spell in management he became a member of the clubs Over 35's team and was captain of the side who won the Amateur Leagues Clifford cup in season 1993/94.
It then looked like Greg had hung up his boots but in season 1999/2000 he was lured back to the clubs Division 3A Saturday team - a team of youngsters that Greg took under his wing and captained to the league title. Having been bitten by the bug again Greg continued to play until he finally retired from competitive football in 2002.
In October 2002 Greg stepped into the breach when the club needed a first team manager. He managed the first team, then playing in AUL Premier C, until he stepped down in May 2004.
Greg turned his hand to club administration in 2005 when he became a member of the newly formed 'Senior Committtee', looking after all the affairs of the AUL section of the club. Greg then moved onto the club Executive in 2006 and became club Chairman in September 2007. Judging from his first few months in charge, there's good things ahead for Ashbourne United under the stewardship of this 'Gentleman of Football'…..
